About me

I’m Laura, I’m 37. I have lived in Faversham for a little over ten years now with my husband Leon and our four Persian cats. Yep, we’re mad cat people and proud! Cats are funnily enough the reason why I started running. I didn’t have a hobby before and wanted to find something to help me get fitter and have a bit of motivation actually see it through so I signed up to a half marathon to raise money for Cat’s Protection last April and the rest is history so they say!

Having a plan to follow has really helped me progress and importantly, avoid injury.

What’s in your kit bag?

For most of my running I wear Brooks Ghost 12, as do quite a few of members of FRC. There’s a reason why they are so popular, they’re cushioned, super comfy and not too heavy. I don’t think you can go wrong with Brooks. I also have a rather bright pair of Asics Dynaflyte 4’s which I use for 5-10k races and when I want to up the pace a little. Though I do have a few other pairs in sight so may have started the slippery slope of acquiring more. And to think running is supposed to be a cheap sport!

I always wear my Garmin Forerunner 245 which has served me well over the past year. I am a bit of a data geek so it’s fun to track progress – not so much when it tells me off for being unproductive! I’m also quite partial to Tikiboo leggings as they’re colourful and super comfy.

What’s been your greatest achievement so far?

Quite honestly the fact that I am still running several times a week is a great achievement. From signing up to that first half to progressing through marathon training has been quite an experience. Shame that all races are postponed for at least 6 months but I know I can do it now!

My top tip

Structure for me is the single biggest tip I can give. Having a plan to follow has really helped me progress and importantly, avoid injury. Before I joined the club I over did it and had a couple of ankle injuries. Always follow the rules and don’t up your distance by more than 10% a week – as tempting as it can be some times.

What would you say now to the pre-Faversham Running Club you?

The club has helped me in so many ways – in terms of running which has helped me both physically and mentally, and also for the community. If anyone is even contemplating running or joining the club, go ahead and do it now, there’s nothing to lose. I feel very lucky to have met a great group of people that inspire me, share my interests and that like to socialise. I am really thankful for everything the club has provided me, from training, motivation to making lasting friendships – especially my partner in crime, Laura Davies!
