About me

I’m Ali, 53, the one who mostly wears pink! Bobbing blond pony tail. The one who clatters her way round the course with the grace of a wonky donkey. Partner Adrian (he cycles) and 2 children Lottie and Ollie.   Oh, and of course DilysDog our little mascot! Relatively new to this running malarkey, really since May when a friend persuaded me that I really would be able to do the C25K (remember that moment in the staff kitchen Jo?!) Not looked back since. Hobbies? I love pottering in my garden, and I can be a bit creative with glass.

Runners often ask what time I’m chasing in a race…”just finishing” is my answer!

What’s in your kit bag?

It’s a bit amateurish to be honest. Still learning which are the best socks, which are the most effective energy gels, etc. I bought my first pair of Brooks trainers a month ago which I love even more than my good old Karrimores! A Fitbit Versa currently counts my steps although I think I may upgrade to Garmin that I hear everyone talking about. Oh and I always have a hankie!

What’s been your greatest achievement so far?

I loved being part of the C25K graduation class in Summer 2019. But I think the very first time I clocked over 10k felt like my greatest achievement. This was after I had accidentally booked myself on to The Race for Life 10k! I was out for a practice run, and I gave my self a little cheer along the Western Link as my FitBit announced the distance!

My top tip

Ermmmmm....Not eating chickpeas the night before running a longer distance? Seriously, not to be too hard on yourself. I’m more of a distance rather than speed runner I’ve worked out. I can’t ever compete with the faster runners, and it took me a while to accept this. I’m happier plodding and being pleased if I get a PB here and there! Runners often ask what time I’m chasing in a race...”just finishing” is my answer!

What would you say now to the pre-Faversham Running Club you?

Firstly, stop mocking the Lycra-clad runners on the roadside, with their luminous jackets and ridiculous head torches! Cos now I’m one of those runners!! Secondly, why didn’t you do this years ago? FRC is such a great club, all-inclusive, friendly and always up for a bit of a giggle! 100% improved my wellbeing.
