About me

Hi, I’m Nick. I’m 39, still. Just. I’m married with a one year old son. I work as a Fraud Investigator, protecting consumers (some vulnerable, some foolish, some both) from investment scams and the like. Away from running, I’m into live music, mostly of the indie rock genre and, for my sins, I’m a follower of Liverpool FC.

My top tip for racing is not to go out too fast – you’ll regret it at two thirds distance when you run out of gas.

What’s in your kit bag?

What’s not in my kit bag?! I have a bit of an addiction to running shoes. I currently favour Adidas as a brand, specifically Adios, but also have some ASICS and New Balance to rotate. I wouldn’t be without my Garmin Fenix 5 watch and its HRM chest strap as I’m almost as hooked on stats as I am on shoes! If the sun is shining, you’ll see me sporting my SunGod shades which I can heartily recommend – I’ll also be the guy with the short shorts.

What’s been your greatest achievement so far?

My greatest achievement to date is the completion on the 2018 Brighton Marathon in 3:32:24 (yes, for me, the seconds do matter!). I’m a 10k runner who occasionally dabbles in slightly longer distances. I found marathon training a real battle of attrition – particularly that horrid 20 miler at Lydd in the lead-up. The feeling crossing the line on Madeira Drive though? Made it all worthwhile.

My top tip

My top tip for racing is not to go out too fast – you'll regret it at two thirds distance when you run out of gas. Pace yourself well early on, finish strong. From a training perspective, treat yourself to a wide variety of routes, distances, undulations and terrains (if you can handle the dirty shoes – I struggle!). The more you vary things, the better a runner you will become in all conditions.

What would you say now to the pre-Faversham Running Club you?

Prior to joining Faversham Running Club, I was a little reticent as I’d been a member of a club in London and as much as it was good, things were taken a little too seriously. I’d say to myself now, don’t be silly, get involved. FRC is a great club with a wide array of personalities and abilities. The club’s biggest asset is its membership and the support through training and on race days is second to none.
